Dementia training for care home staff

The Right Training for Every Role in Your Home

Not everyone in a care home needs the same depth of dementia training. PMH matches each staff group to the right tier of the national Dementia Training Standards Framework, so your whole team is trained at the level their role requires.

Framework Tier 1

Every member of your home

Reception, housekeeping, kitchen, activities and maintenance staff: dementia awareness so every interaction respects dignity and supports the person.

Framework Tier 2

Care staff and nurses

Carers, senior carers and nurses who support residents every day: communication, person-led care planning, responding to distress, supporting families and end-of-life care.

Framework Tier 3

Managers and dementia leads

Registered managers, deputies and dementia champions: leading culture change, embedding good practice and evaluating how well training works in your home.

What your team will learn

Practical Skills for Daily Care

PMH training is built on Pat Hobson's Unique Life, Unique World, Unique Environment Model of Dementia Care, which she delivered to care homes between 2009 and 2014. It focuses on the person, not the diagnosis.

  • Understanding how dementia affects perception, communication and behaviour
  • Person-led care built on each resident's life history, identity and preferences
  • Communicating and keeping connection as verbal ability changes
  • Recognising distress and behaviour as communication of an unmet need
  • Reducing reliance on restrictive practice
  • Working with families as partners in care
  • Leadership, supervision and a person-led culture across the home

Dementia Training Standards Framework

Meeting the Dementia Training Standards Framework

The national Dementia Training Standards Framework sets out what health and social care staff should know about dementia, at three tiers. The 2026 update brings fresh expectations for care providers. PMH dementia training covers all three framework tiers.

Framework Tier 1

Dementia awareness

Everyone working in health and social care, including staff who are not care workers, such as reception, housekeeping, kitchen and maintenance teams.

Framework Tier 2

Dementia skills and knowledge

Staff who work regularly and directly with people living with dementia, such as care workers, senior carers and nurses.

Framework Tier 3

Leadership in transforming dementia care

Managers, team leaders, dementia leads and those responsible for implementing and evaluating dementia training in their organisation.
