Dementia Training Standards Framework

Training Across All Three National Tiers

The national Dementia Training Standards Framework sets out what people working in health and social care should know and be able to do, at three levels. PMH dementia training covers all three framework tiers, so every member of your team can be trained at the level their role requires.

Framework Tier 1

Dementia awareness

Everyone working in health and social care, including staff who are not care workers, such as reception, housekeeping, kitchen and maintenance teams.

Framework Tier 2

Dementia skills and knowledge

Staff who work regularly and directly with people living with dementia, such as care workers, senior carers and nurses.

Framework Tier 3

Leadership in transforming dementia care

Managers, team leaders, dementia leads and those responsible for implementing and evaluating dementia training in their organisation.

Who it is for

Dementia Training for Healthcare Professionals

PMH dementia training is designed for professionals and organisations, from frontline care staff and nurses to managers, senior leaders and commissioners. Content and depth are matched to each role, so learning connects directly to the responsibilities people hold in practice.

Care staff

Foundational and advanced dementia care capability: the knowledge, empathy and practical skills to provide consistently person-led care.

Nurses

Dementia nursing capability across assessment, care planning, communication, behaviour support and family engagement.

Registered managers

The leadership understanding, reflective practice and governance skills to create and sustain dementia-capable services.

Clinical leads

Clinical leadership in dementia care, connecting medication management, end-of-life care and person-centred practice.

Senior leaders

Dementia care governance, quality assurance and the leadership behaviours that create person-led organisational cultures.

Commissioners

The knowledge and assurance frameworks to commission, evaluate and quality-assure dementia care services.

What the training covers

Building Real Dementia Care Capability

Need to change how dementia care works across your whole organisation, not only train staff? See PMH dementia care consultancy.

Understanding dementia

How different types of dementia affect cognition, perception, communication and behaviour, moving beyond awareness to practical understanding.

Person-led practice

Care led by the person's identity, history, preferences and rights, using Pat Hobson's Unique Life, Unique World, Unique Environment model.

Communication and relationships

Practical approaches to maintaining connection as verbal ability changes, including non-verbal communication and validation.

Distress and behaviour as communication

Recognising behaviour as an expression of unmet need, and responding to the cause rather than managing the symptom.

Leadership in dementia care

How leadership, supervision, governance and culture shape the daily experience of people living with dementia.

Dementia-friendly organisations

Environment, culture and operational practice that genuinely support people living with dementia and their families.
