About the masterclass

To celebrate the official launch of the PMH Academy on Monday, 2 November 2026, join Pat Hobson, who developed the Behaviours that Challenge Model presented at the International Conference in Dementia in 2008 and explored in the 2019 and 2025 Enabling People with Dementia: Understanding and Implementing Person-Centred Care, and now the flagship model for supporting organisations to manage behaviours that challenge.

Originally developed for people living with dementia, the model was extended to people with complex mental health needs, learning disabilities and/or autism. This is a live, 60-minute practical masterclass designed exclusively for health and social care leaders and practitioners.

“There is no behaviour that challenges that does not have a meaning; it is our inability to understand the significance of that behaviour that is the issue.”

What We Will Unpack Step-by-Step

  1. 1

Outline the case study presentation of a person living with dementia behind the person-centred model, now enhanced to incorporate person-led elements. The model focuses on reframing distress signals so frontline care teams decode root causes instead of reacting to heightened symptoms.

  2. 2

Reduce avoidable escalations and eliminate unnecessary restrictive interventions systematically.

  3. 3

Demonstrate what person-led and person-centred care plans should focus on.
